VALVE TAPPET CLEARANCE

Checking or adjusting the tappet clearance should be performed while the engine is cold.

1. turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position, remove both fuel lines from the fuel valve body and remove the fuel tank.

2. Remove the point cover and eight tappet adjusting hole caps (1).

3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the "T" (1 - 4 cylinder) mark (2) with the index mark (3). Make sure the No. 1 piston is at the top of the compression stroke by feeling the tappets with your fingers. If the No 1 cylinder tappets are free, it is an indication that the No. 1 cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke. If the tappets are tight, rotate the crankshaft 360° and re-align the marks.

4. Check the clearance of both valves by inserting the feeler gauge (4) between the tappet adjusting screw (5) and the valve stem.

Intake: 0.05 mm (0.0019 in.)

Exhaust: 0.08 mm (0.0031 in.)

5. Adjustment is made by loosening the locknut (6) and turning the screw (5). After tightening the lock nut (6) recheck the clearance.

6. To check or adjust clearance of No. 4 cylinder valves, rotate the crankshaft clockwise 360° and re-align the marks, then follow steps 4 and 5.

7. Valve tappet adjustment for No. 2 and 3 cylinder can be performed as in steps 3 through 6, however the 2.3 cylinder mark must show (not 1.4 mark) when the index mark and "T" mark are aligned.
